Your Resume May Be Tax Deductible...

Specific expenses incurred in looking for a new job in your present occupation, even if you do not get a new job, may be deducted from your taxes. According to current IRS tax rules, you can deduct amounts spent for typing, printing, and mailing copies of your resume to prospective employers if you are looking for a new job in your present occupation.

You may not deduct these expenditures if:

  • You are looking for a job in a new occupation
  • There was a substantial break between jobs
  • You are looking for a job for the first time

In order to claim a deduction, you must itemize your expenses via Schedule A of your tax return (NOTE: miscellaneous deductions, including employment search expenses, must exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income).

For more on claiming job search related deductions in the US, visit

http://www.irs.gov

and find "Job Search Expenses" under "Forms and Publications". Resume Workshop provides each customer with receipts for products purchased. Be sure to keep them with your tax records.
